Limited edition hand pulled three layer screen print (edition of 23)
Muted lilac, coral + dark sage green colour way edition
Based on artwork from Josie’s artwork for Northern Print’s ‘ Hadrian’s Wall 1900 project’ as a response to Josie’s visit to Birdoswald’s roman fort with her mother.
More about the story behind the piece:
“I visited Birdoswald with my mum and we had a lovely day out together taking in all the history of the site, but were both drawn to the Urns that had been excavated and were on display there.
One Urn was that of a 5 year old child, which they had determined so by a child’s tooth found inside. Another Urn was found very close to this Urn, suggesting a close connection between the two people. It was determined to be that of a young adult, probably female, between 20-40 years old.
To me this felt like the story of a mother and child, buried close the each other. I was struck by the sense of this eternal love and connection that transcends time and lingers long after physical forms fade. It wasn’t lost on me that I was there with my own mother enjoying a special day together, and I started thinking about my own place as a daughter, and also as a mother, with my own feelings of eternal love and connection.
In my piece I wanted to honour my interpretation of their story, along with my own.
The fragmented pieces surrounding the Urns make up the exact shape of the Urn if pieced back together and if you look closely, you will see a little tooth hiding in the image.”
